LMDC Family Advisory Committee Meeting
July 30, 2002
Viewing Wall
A viewing wall has begun to be erected around the site. This wall will be transparent and have large panels placed at intervals. The panels will include the history of the site, planning information, tributes and places to leave memorabilia. Some panels may be erected by September.
On-Site Family Room
In addition to the Family Room on the 20th floor of One Liberty Plaza, the Port Authority/LMDC has converted a shed overlooking the site on Liberty St (at the top of the ramp) into an On-Site Family Room. It is about 400 square feet, has carpeting, 3 large windows, heat and air conditioning and 2 handicapped accessible bathrooms. It can hold about 20 people. There will also be a private, family-only area outside the shed available to view the site. This will possibly open in August, but a date has not yet been set.
***The Family Room at One Liberty Plaza will remain open for families indefinitely as well.
Memorial
Family advisors discussed the issue of transportation plans piercing the below-grade footprints of the towers. Many advisors argued that the Port Authority and LMDC should engage creative planning to avoid these sacred areas as the remains of many heroes ( all murdered that day were heroes) were recovered in these sub-surface areas. A feasibility study will be conducted and further discussion will ensue.
