The following has been completed to GIVE VOICE to the WTC victims' families among the media, state and city public officials making decisions that pertain to the time schedule, firefighter manpower and procedures used recover loved ones still buried at ground zero:
1. Launched a multi-state letter writing and telephone campaign to
State and City public officials. Many families and GIVE YOUR VOICE supporters have written and made phone calls to Senators' Clinton, Shumer, Governor Pataki and the White House! We now await their response.
2. Telephone campaign launched to Alexander Winslow of Bechtel Construction. Its purpose is to offer a forum to communicate with WTC Victims' Families about Bechtel's role and future plans for the site. Questions were left unanswered. Many of us were told that he would return the calls. To date, no communication has come from his office.
3. Media attention. The New York Times article "Facing Criticism- The City Adds Firefighters to the Site" reported some success on the issues of resources dedicated to the recovery effort but failed to address other critical issues. These include:
a.) No mention about removal of imposed time limitations
or the administration's commitment to keep its promise
to ensure that the recovery effort would not stop
until every stone has been turned. We still see large
construction machines at ground zero whose purpose is
to expedite debris removal and move the project away
from a recovery to a construction and redevelopment
site.
b.) No acknowledgment exists in the public sector to
recognize the concerns, fears and needs of the WTC
Victims' Families pertaining to lack of communication,
no offer for representation or provision of a forum to
speak on the issues. The WTC Victims' Families also
maintain low priority status concerning financial
support.
c.) No formal public advocate has been assigned to serve
as our liaison with the city. No public official has
the official responsibility to protect and speak on
behalf of the WTC Victims' Families.
We have much work to do and without your support, our reach and impact
Is limited. With all of our hearts, thank you for your prayers and support. They are so needed. Please continue to mail letters and calls to public officials. The WTC Victims' Families are the forgotten entity and it is our goal to change that. We must continue in the name of our loved ones!
